First off, I want to say the biggest thank you for the outpouring of love following our engagement announcement last week. I received so many messages and they truly meant the world to us. We are so excited about this next chapter in life.
The Backstory //
For the past 15 years my family has gone to York Beach, Maine every summer. This is our tradition and has become one of my favorite places in the world. The air smells sweet from the candies being made in the 120 year old taffy store and you can hear the laughter from the arcade and bowling alley right on the ocean- it's one of those places where everything just feels "right".
Kyle and I have been together for almost 5 years now and he has joined my family on our annual beach trip the past 3 years. We are at a point in our relationship where talking about next steps was a natural progression. It was clear both of us wanted to grow our lives together- we've talked about getting engaged, starting a family, building a home (all the things you dream of when you're little) but I never thought we would actually get engaged soon.
Kyle kept joking about getting engaged these past few months but I just pushed it aside because I thought to myself - he's not actually going to do it. As you know just a couple of months ago we bought our first home together and I felt very comfortable where we were at in our relationship and life.
The Proposal //
Kyle decided to take me out for an early Birthday dinner on August, 10th (my birthday is the 13th). I put on the one dress I had packed and Kyle put on khakis and a matching button up shirt, I thought we cleaned up pretty nice. We got in the car and headed to Cape Neddick Lobster Pound which was just a short drive from our hotel. We had the most delicious dinner, I ordered the stuffed lobster and Kyle had the filet.
After we finished dinner Kyle noticed there was the start of a sunset and insisted we head back to the hotel (which is right on the ocean) to watch it. We raced back to the hotel and we grabbed a blanket and headed for the rocks along the ocean. We climbed the rocks until I found the perfect one to watch the sunset from, I insisted we needed one with the perfect view.
We settled onto the rock a top the beach blanket and just stared out at the beautiful setting sun. It was like a dream- the sky was cotton candy pink and all we could hear were the ocean waves.
As we sat side by side watching the sun set that night Kyle got down on one knee atop the rocks and asked me to marry him. I don't think I was able to get any words out of my mouth other than yes and "are you serious!??".
It was the most magical moment that I will never forget.
After he proposed we soaked up the rest of the sunset and headed back to the hotel to tell my parents- who already knew he was going to propose! He told everyone except me but apparently that's how this works.
Later that night we headed out to the arcade and played skee ball ( I won by a lot!!) and we took some silly photos in the photo booth which I'll cherish forever- we were seriously high on life.
Side Note //
My Grandpa passed away in 2015- I loved him so much and felt such a void after he passed. After his death I noticed that butterflies kept coming around me. I'd be sitting on the porch and one would just appear- and I'd just get the feeling that it was him. On the day Kyle proposed there were butterflies everywhere. We went to Kennebunkport that day and we were at this church right on the ocean and this butterfly was following me the entire time- I smiled and thought there he is. Then we went to the Nubble Lighthouse, and there was another butterfly. After Kyle proposed we walked back into our hotel room and inside the room flying around was a butterfly, and I just knew he had been there all day. It brought me so much happiness to know he was there in spirit for that special moment.
I hope you've enjoyed this special moment in our life. Again thank you so much for all the love!
XO,
Nicholle
